Extended Family: Morelos Family

I met Iya in the 7th grade, when she moved to L.A. from Drexel Hill, PA. I’d never even heard of Drexel Hill until I met her, but all I can say is, thank goodness her family got sick of the east coast winters because I don’t know what life would have been had we never met.

Iya and I attended a relatively small Catholic elementary school, and because of its size, it didn’t take much for families to get acquainted. I can still remember the first time I met Iya’s mom. It was back-to-school night early that school year, and after our teacher was done speaking to the parents, Iya and her mom were on their way out of the classroom when we met by the door. “Marissa said you’re the smartest girl in the class,” Tita Susie said. Well geez, how could I not love her instantly? hahaha! All jokes aside, though, that was the beginning of my wonderful, familial relationship with Iya’s whole family and they are as fun loving a group of people as you could ever meet. For the last 21 years, they’ve included me in birthday celebrations, weddings, baby showers and even the not so happy moments when they’ve had to say good-bye to a loved one. Each time they welcomed me as one of their own and I feel so privileged to be in such a position.

To celebrate Tito Nesty and Tita Susie’s anniversary, the family thought it’d be fun to get together and have some pictures taken. We spent the afternoon at Frank Bonelli Park in San Dimas and, despite the chance of rain, I prayed all morning for at least 2 hours of sunlight and man almighty, I got like 3! Everyone was so awesome in front of the camera too!

Tito Nesty, Tita Susie, Kuya Dennis, Kuya Francis and Iya – thank you for 21 years of friendship and family!

All Grown Up: Morelos Family

Pure silliness and just plain antics! That’s what Kuya Francis, Ate Jenny, Matthew and Samantha are! Unfortunately, Kuya Francis wasn’t feeling well on the day of the shoot, so it was more about Matthew and Samantha and, because they’re such scene stealers, it really couldn’t have gone any other way.

Matthew and Samantha are just hilarious. Born just a couple of years apart, they’ve got the typical brother-sister relationship at their age that is just so fun to be around. They tease and punk each other constantly, but they’ve also got that caring side that they probably don’t like to show off just yet, haha!

I can’t believe how grown up these two are. I was at the hospital the day that Matthew was born and I remember holding Samantha when she was just this tiny little bubble of curls. Now they’re these kids that just love to keep everyone around them laughing and entertained. Knowing what a joker their dad is and what a talented lady their mom is, the apples really didn’t fall far from the tree.

Our First Christmas: Valles Family

I had the pleasure of shooting quite a few family shoots this holiday season and first up were the Valles Family. Jonah (my godson, woot woot!) was born just this past summer and already he’s such a character! It’s always hit or miss when you’re taking photos of babies and kids, because there’s no telling what exactly will get them to smile or laugh. But before we left the house, there was one thing we couldn’t forget to bring – Jonah’s elephant rattle.

“Just rattle this when it’s time to take the picture,” Ate Tin said. “He loves it!”

With the camera on the tripod, I had a free hand to shake that rattle before every shot and wow, it did wonders because Jonah was smiling practically all morning. What a cutie, and what a heartbreaker this little godson of mine will be when he grows up!

Can’t wait for Jonah’s 6-month shoot, Ate and Jeff!
