Blessed Child: Natalia’s Baptism

Baptisms are probably one of my favorite celebrations. Surrounded by family and friends, a little baby is welcomed officially into his/her Catholic faith. What a wonderful moment to witness!

On this special day, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Downtown L.A., little Natalia had her turn. Her mom is my awesome friend, Grace, who I met through a retreat a few years ago. Though we don’t see each other that often, it’s always such a heartwarming time when we do meet, and I was more than honored she asked me to help document Natalia’s baptism.

She and her husband, Jorge, their older daughter, Olivia aka Livie and little Natalia are this wonderful, loving family and I feel so privileged to have helped keep this unique day a memorable one.

Portraits of Closeness: Dawa Family

We call each other “treasure,” my friend Melissa and I. It was a Saturday night during our senior year at UC Irvine, and we were hanging out at my apartment having our own little pity party. Ok…I was having my own little party and Isa was unlucky enough to be my only guest. “No one loves me. No one treasures me,” I lamented. Whether I had had too much dessert or too much alcohol (?), I don’t remember. What does stick out in my mind, however, is that Isa quickly responded, “I TREASURE YOU!” And from then on, the pet name has stuck, which is fitting because her friendship is something I truly value.

Isa is one loving wife, mom, daughter, sister, auntie and friend. Her husband, Nick, is probably one of the nicest people I know. Her son, Zavyer, calls me, “Auntie Nana,” and her baby girl, Alina, is my sweet little goddaughter. When she asked me to take pictures of her family, I knew it’d be my pleasure to do so.

Zavyer and his cousin, Aaden, were hilarious. Being at the park, with the playground so close to where we were shooting, the boys were beyond antsy to ditch the photographer and get on the swings. After an hour or so, they were rewarded and absolutely beside themselves swinging back and forth. It doesn’t seem like much of an event, but you know it’s a moment their parents and grandparents will probably look back on and smile about.

Red-dy for Christmas: Mindanao Family

Cute. Cute. And…CUTE SOME MORE. As if my niece Lorelai’s adorableness wasn’t to-die for enough, her puppy sister Chewie had to share in the spotlight. Either way, it’s hard not to keep your eyes on either of them. Lorelai, in her fancy red dress and headband, looked like she was ready for a cocktail party. And Chewie looked like Santa’s little helper.

My cousin, Matt, who I literally grew up with since we were 4 years old, is like a brother to me. His dad was my dad’s best man, and when I moved here from the Philippines, he was my first friend. And Rochelle? I’ve known her just as long. Her parents were friends of my aunt and uncle and we ended up going to the same high school. She took Matt to prom, they dated, got married and now I have a niece who melts my very heart when I see her happy face. Can’t forget Chewie, who always seems so excited when I visit. Ok fine, she’s excited each time ANYONE visits, but still, it’s nice when someone’s happy you’re there. haha!

I’m so happy to have been around for Lorelai’s first Christmas season, and I’m looking forward to 20 years from now when I’ll be telling her what an adorable baby she was =)
